British hospital to outsource jobs to India

LONDON : A struggling British hospital is shifting administration work to India in a bid to save cash.

New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, central England, will send its patient information by email to India in a bid to slash its annual five-million-pound (US$8.8 million, 7.2-million-euro) medical secretary bill.

“Our auditors have told us we can halve this by sending work overseas,” said hospital chief executive David Loughton.

“I have some concerns as to whether it will work or not but we have to look at it.”

Doctors’ voice recordings will be sent via the Internet to copy typists in India.

The hospital has already announced 300 job cuts.

India has emerged as a major back office to the world with firms outsourcing work ranging from credit card processing to air ticketing to take advantage of its less expensive, educated, English-speaking workforce.
